Battery technology evolution and its role in renewable energy
Modern battery technology has evolved into highly complex engineering systems, essential for electric vehicles, solar power systems, and industrial energy storage. Dr. Róbert Kun, a researcher at the HUN-REN Research Centre for Natural Sciences, explains that contemporary lithium-ion cells function like high-performance Formula 1 engines, utilizing micron-thin copper and aluminum foils, electrode coatings, and separators to manage energy.
Beyond individual devices, batteries serve as critical buffers for the energy grid, storing excess power from intermittent renewable sources like wind and solar. However, the transition to widespread storage faces economic hurdles, as the technology becomes viable only when it is cost-effective. The environmental impact of batteries is also complex, involving considerations of how electricity is generated for charging and the energy required during the manufacturing process.
