Batthyány-örökmécses monument marks its centenary

The Batthyány-örökmécses monument, designed by Móric Pogány, marks its centenary. Unveiled on October 6, 1926, the memorial serves as a significant site for Hungarian historical remembrance and national commemoration.

The monument honors Lajos Batthyány, Hungary’s first responsible Prime Minister, who was executed at this location on October 6, 1849. The site was formerly the courtyard of the Újépület barracks, which served as a prison and execution site during the period of Austrian absolutism.

To mark the occasion, the Magyar Batthyány Alapítvány organized the ‘Batthyány Ősz’ program series. These events aim to foster interest in Hungarian history among youth through research and creative activities, concluding with a ceremonial wreath-laying and candle-lighting ceremony at the memorial to honor Batthyány and the martyrs of the 1848-49 War of Independence.
