Battle of Aljubarrota: The 1385 victory that secured Portuguese independence

The Battle of Aljubarrota, fought on August 14, 1385, remains a decisive moment in Portuguese history, securing the nation's independence and political legitimacy. Led by King João I and the commander Nuno Álvares Pereira, the Portuguese forces defeated the numerically superior Castilian army at the Campo de São Jorge.

The victory is characterized as a triumph of strategic intelligence and discipline over sheer numbers. By utilizing the terrain and implementing disciplined formations, the Portuguese military successfully challenged the dominant warfare paradigms of the era. This success facilitated a significant transformation of the Portuguese military, evolving it into an expeditionary force capable of projecting power toward North Africa and Ceuta in the following decades.

Historically, the battle resolved the Crisis of 1383–1385, confirming a new political project for the kingdom and establishing a foundation for future national expansion.
