Battle of Mohács 1526: The conflict that reshaped Central Europe

The Battle of Mohács, fought on August 29, 1526, remains a pivotal event in Central European history. The conflict saw the Hungarian army, led by King Louis II Jagiellon, face the Ottoman forces of Sultan Suleiman I. The Hungarian forces, numbering between 26,000 and 27,000, were significantly outnumbered and outmatched by the Ottoman military, which held a two-to-threefold advantage in both manpower and material.

The battle was brief but catastrophic, resulting in approximately 20,000 casualties on each side. King Louis II died during the retreat, an event that triggered a succession crisis and a struggle for power between John Zápolya and Ferdinand Habsburg. This political instability ultimately contributed to the dissolution of Hungary as a unified, independent state.

The aftermath of the battle reshaped the region, with Upper Hungary becoming a vital economic and defensive hub for the Habsburg Monarchy against Ottoman expansion. Pressburg emerged as a significant administrative center during this period of transition.
