Battle of Mohács: Historical perspectives and legacy

Historical discussions and podcast series are examining the multifaceted legacy and perspectives of the 1526 Battle of Mohács. Research highlights how the Ottoman Empire utilized the victory as a tool for state memory, constructing monuments as early as 1630–31 to reinforce imperial glory during periods of decline.

In Hungary, the defeat has undergone various interpretations across different eras. During the 19th-century national awakening, it became a symbol of national loss, later evolving into a historical precursor to the Treaty of Trianon. Academic perspectives have shifted from critical military analyses in the late 19th century to class-struggle interpretations in the post-1945 era, which linked the defeat to internal social tensions such as the peasant uprisings of 1514.

A new podcast series, ‘Mohács évszázada’, explores the conflict from the Ottoman perspective. It investigates the foreign policy of Suleiman the Magnificent and questions whether the 1526 campaign was a pre-planned march toward Mohács or a more complex diplomatic and military progression involving the Kingdom of Hungary.
