Battle of Évora (29 July 1808) in the French invasion of Portugal
The Battle of Évora took place on 29 July 1808 as part of the first French invasion of Portugal. French forces under General Jean‑Andoche Junot occupied Lisbon while the Portuguese court was in Brazil. The French presence was largely symbolic, but the city of Évora became a focal point for resistance.
A heterogeneous Portuguese popular force—farmers, artisans, clergy, nobles—joined with Spanish contingents and local juntas to attack the French troops. The clash illustrated the tension between modern Napoleonic military discipline and the older, community‑based structures of Portuguese society. Although the French had artillery and regular troops, the uprising showed the capacity of a “people in arms” to challenge imperial authority.
