Battlefield 2 nearing unofficial open-source release

A modder has announced that an unofficial, reverse-engineered open-source version of the 2005 first-person shooter Battlefield 2 is nearing public release. The project aims to provide a “drop-in replacement” to ensure the game remains playable and accessible through 2026.

The developer reported that the server component is 100% complete for 64-bit Windows and is on par with the original retail version. The client is described as being nearly fully compatible and functional on most maps. The source code is intended to be released free of charge via GitHub and the “Back 2 Battlefield” Discord server.

Key features of the project include compatibility with existing mods, such as Special Forces, and the ability to connect to any GameSpy backend. The developer intends to implement bug fixes, quality-of-life improvements, and security patches to enhance the experience on modern systems while remaining faithful to the original design.
