Batwara 1947 faces box office challenges after Independence Day weekend

The period drama ‘Batwara 1947’, starring Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta, has experienced a fluctuating opening at the Indian box office. Released on August 14 during the Independence Day weekend, the film saw a significant surge on its second day, earning approximately Rs 12.65 crore to Rs 13.50 crore. However, collections dropped on Sunday and saw a sharp decline on Monday, with the fourth-day earnings falling to roughly Rs 2.00 crore.

The film’s total domestic net collection reached approximately Rs 28.50 crore by the start of the week. It faces a challenging commercial path, having been released alongside ‘Awarapan 2’, which has significantly outperformed it. With a reported production budget of Rs 120 crore, the film has yet to recover a substantial portion of its investment.

While commercial performance has been mixed, veteran actor Hema Malini has publicly praised the film, calling it ‘simply brilliant’ and lauding its message of humanity and harmony. Conversely, some critics and netizens have directed backlash toward the film’s music, composed by A. R. Rahman, suggesting it failed to meet the emotional needs of the patriotic storyline.
