Batwara 1947 sees significant second-day box office surge

The period drama Batwara 1947, starring Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta, has seen a fluctuating start at the Indian box office. After a moderate opening day earning approximately Rs 5.50 to 5.75 crore net, the film experienced a significant 125 percent surge on its second day, reaching Rs 13 crore net. This brought its two-day domestic total to roughly Rs 18.50 crore.

Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and produced by Aamir Khan Productions, the film is an adaptation of Asghar Wajahat’s play, Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai. Set during the 1947 Partition of India, the narrative follows Sikandar Mirza (Sunny Deol) and his family as they move to Lahore, where they form an unlikely bond with an elderly Hindu woman, Durgavati 'Mai' Devi (Shabana Azmi), who refuses to leave her home.

Critical and audience reception has been mixed. While many praised the emotional depth, the performances of the ensemble cast—including Shabana Azmi and the return of Preity Zinta—and the film's message of humanity, some reviewers criticized the pacing, melodrama, and reliance on older Bollywood tropes. The film faced stiff competition during its release from Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2 and the Hollywood film Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
