Bauchi State partners UNICEF to combat cholera outbreak

The Bauchi State Government, through the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA) and in partnership with UNICEF, has launched an intervention to combat a cholera outbreak in the state.

As part of the response, WASH Desk Officers from eight local government areas (LGAs) participated in a three-day workshop focused on the Case Area Targeted Intervention (CATI) strategy. This method aims to interrupt disease transmission at its source by improving water, sanitation, and hygiene services. Officials noted that cases have already been recorded in seven LGAs.

Key components of the response include deploying emergency teams to high-risk communities, conducting step-down training for community teams, and distributing cholera prevention kits. UNICEF WASH Specialist Nambam Dawap emphasized the importance of clean water, improved sanitation to prevent open defecation, and consistent handwashing to reduce disease risk. The initiative also focuses on water quality testing to protect vulnerable populations, particularly children.
