Bañugues beach faces renewed Escherichia coli contamination

Bañugues beach in Gozón is facing renewed concerns regarding water quality following the detection of Escherichia coli. The Coordinadora Ecoloxista d’Asturies reported that recent analyses from the Ministry of Health indicate fecal contamination, marking the second such occurrence this summer.

Environmentalists have criticized the regional government for maintaining the beach's status as “pending confirmation” rather than issuing immediate warnings to users. The group attributes these recurring episodes to long-standing sanitation issues and sewage discharges affecting the inlet. They are calling on the Principality and the Hydrographic Confederation to implement a definitive solution to the area's sewage infrastructure, a matter they claim has remained unresolved for decades.
