Bauke Mollema to retire after final Il Lombardia race
Dutch professional cyclist Bauke Mollema is set to retire from professional racing following his final appearance in the Il Lombardia race. The 39-year-old rider will compete for the Lidl-Trek team, where he will serve as a support rider for teammates such as Juan Ayuso and Giulio Ciccone.
Mollema will set a record by participating in his 18th edition of Il Lombardia, a milestone he shares with Italian rider Faresin. Having won the race in 2019, Mollema expressed a desire to enjoy the event and the Italian atmosphere during his final outing.
In an interview, Mollema noted the emotional weight of his retirement after a 20-year career. He mentioned that while he is looking forward to the change, there is uncertainty regarding life after professional cycling. His final race will conclude in Como, Italy.
