Bavaria cancels grading for central math test after leak
A centralized mathematics grade-level test for 10th-grade students at Bavarian gymnasiums will not be graded this year following a security leak. The Bavarian Ministry of Education and Culture announced that the test, which was scheduled for October 1, cannot be used for formal assessment because equal treatment of students can no longer be guaranteed.
The leak originated from an error at a single school, causing the exam questions to circulate online prematurely. Approximately 37,000 students across 430 state and state-recognized gymnasiums were expected to participate. While the ministry has not named the specific school involved, it stated that intensive discussions will take place regarding the incident.
Instead of a graded exam, schools have been advised to use the test materials for ungraded, internal assessments to identify learning gaps and guide individual student support. Results from these internal sessions are not to be reported to the ministry. This is not the first time such a central test has been compromised, following a similar cancellation in 2025.
