Bavaria carp harvesting season begins

The carp harvesting season has officially begun in Bavaria, marking a critical period for the region's extensive pond management industry. Approximately 8,000 family businesses manage around 40,000 ponds, covering nearly 20,000 hectares of water surface. The production is primarily concentrated in Middle Franconia and the Upper Palatinate.

Agricultural officials expect a harvest of between 4,000 and 4,500 tons this year. While production conditions are favorable, this volume is considered relatively low due to losses caused by predators such as otters. The industry is noted for its traditional, nature-oriented methods, utilizing small ponds with an average size of 0.4 hectares.

Beyond economic impact, the carp ponds serve significant ecological functions, acting as flood retention basins, filtering nutrients, and providing habitats for various plant and animal species. The tradition of carp farming in the region dates back over 1,000 years.
