Bavaria creative industries face data gap amid AI rise
The cultural and creative industries in Bavaria remain a significant economic driver, but official state statistics are struggling to keep pace with rapid industry shifts. The third Bavarian Cultural and Creative Industries Report, published in 2024, relies on data from 2022, which recorded 44.4 billion euros in revenue, 21.4 billion euros in gross value added, and 344,845 employees across eleven sub-sectors including architecture, design, film, music, and software.
Since those figures were recorded, the industry has undergone significant changes, most notably due to the rapid rise of artificial intelligence. While the state's comprehensive statistics are outdated, other metrics like the Creative Index—developed by the Association of Bavarian Business (vbw), the Bavarian State Association of the Cultural and Creative Industries, and IW Consult—attempt to track current trends. This index monitors employment developments, expert opinions, and media coverage to gauge the industry's current sentiment and direction.
