Bavaria emerges as leading German startup hub
Bavaria has established itself as a leading startup hub in Germany, according to the German Startup Monitor 2026. Munich alone accounts for five of the country’s ten largest financing rounds, and 13 of Germany’s 39 unicorns are headquartered in the Bavarian state.
Bavarian Economic Minister Hubert Aiwanger highlighted the region's strength in sectors such as AI, DeepTech, and Defense. He emphasized the state's commitment to supporting founders through various programs, including BayStartUP and digital entrepreneurship centers, aimed at providing capital, networking, and reducing bureaucracy.
Complementing this growth, the 12th annual Bits & Pretzels festival is taking place in Munich from September 28 to 30. The event expects approximately 7,500 participants, including 2,000 investors and entrepreneurs. This year’s theme, ‘Human After All’, focuses on human resilience and judgment as a counterpoint to AI euphoria. The speaker lineup includes high-profile figures such as Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, comedian Trevor Noah, and podcast host Steven Bartlett.
