Bavaria experiences significant camping boom driven by luxury demand
Camping in Bavaria is experiencing a significant surge in popularity, characterized by a shift toward luxury accommodations. According to the Bavarian State Office for Statistics, overnight stays at campsites in the state rose from approximately five million in 2015 to around 8.6 million in 2025, representing an increase of over 70 percent.
This growth significantly outpaces the 17 percent increase seen across all other types of accommodation during the same period. Modern campsites, such as five-star facilities at Hopfensee, now offer amenities typically found in hotels, including indoor pools, wellness areas, and luxury holiday homes, alongside traditional pitches.
Experts from the German Institute for Tourism Research (dwif) attribute this trend to changing societal values. The demand for freedom, flexibility, and individualization, combined with a desire for nature and deceleration in an increasingly digital world, is driving the industry's image transformation.
