Bavaria faces economic risks due to energy grid limitations

Bavaria has reached record levels in solar energy expansion, with over 1.3 million systems providing approximately 31.2 gigawatts of installed capacity. Currently, 75 percent of the state's electricity generation comes from renewable sources.

However, the economic benefits of this record are limited by challenges in grid expansion and a lack of wind power. While solar energy production is high, its intermittent nature requires other energy sources to fill gaps at night and during winter, increasing overall system costs. Furthermore, the lack of sufficient transmission lines prevents wind energy produced in northern Germany from reaching industrial centers in the south, often leading to the shutdown of wind plants on high-production days.

These energy infrastructure limitations are impacting regional investment decisions. For instance, the Schwarz Group's digital subsidiary recently announced plans to build one of Germany's largest data centers near the Baltic Sea, citing the availability of affordable green electricity as a key factor. Other major industrial projects, such as Intel's planned chip factory in Magdeburg, have also highlighted the importance of energy and location in recent investment trends.
