Hamburg Port Authority plans to cut 350 Elbwald trees amid protest and reforestation push

The Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) intends to fell approximately 350 poplar trees in the Finkenwerder industrial area to make way for new container terminals. A broad coalition of environmental, economic and political groups has launched a petition that is close to completion, opposing the felling. The opposing initiative proposes planting about 3,000 trees on a 24‑hectare former landfill behind the Elbe riverbank to create a city forest, and will release a documentary in autumn about the Elbwald’s history. The campaign’s contact person is Franz Hermann (Elbchaussee 132, 2765 Hamburg). Historically, Hamburg merchants planted 100 poplars in 1926 at the Bubendey quay as a shield for the petroleum harbour, and Jürgen “Fiffi” Schaper added roughly 300 more in the early 1950s.
