Global temperatures hit record highs in September 2026

September 2026 was recorded as the second warmest September globally, with average surface air temperatures reaching 16.27°C. This marks the second consecutive month where global temperatures exceeded the 1.5°C threshold above pre-industrial levels.

Ocean temperatures reached unprecedented levels, with global sea surface temperatures hitting a record 21.05°C for the month. In the Pacific Ocean, the Nino 3.4 region reached a historic high of 29.7°C, driven by an exceptionally intense El Niño phenomenon. Experts suggest this warming trend could persist into 2027.

In Europe, the month was characterized by extreme weather. Western Europe experienced its warmest September on record, while much of the continent faced severe drought. This has led to record-low water levels in major rivers, including the Rhine, Danube, Vistula, and Garonne-Dordogne, impacting shipping, agriculture, and water supplies.
