Bavaria features a high density of historic old towns characterized by half-timbered buildings, cobblestone streets, and medieval walls. Notable locations include Miltenberg, known as the ‘Pearl of the Main’ for its 16th and 17th-century architecture and the Mildenburg castle, and Füssen, which possesses a history spanning over 2,000 years.

Augsburg, Bavaria’s third-largest city, holds several distinctions. It celebrates the Peace Festival on August 8, a unique public holiday rooted in the 1555 Peace of Augsburg. Additionally, the city is home to the Fuggerei, founded in 1521, which is recognized as the world’s oldest existing social housing settlement. According to the 2026 Happiness Atlas, Augsburg also ranks as one of the happiest cities in Germany.
