NATO fighter jets, specifically Italian Eurofighter Typhoons, shot down an unidentified drone that entered Lithuanian airspace shortly after midnight on Tuesday. The incident occurred near the village of Pratkūnai, close to the Kaunas Reservoir in central Lithuania.

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda confirmed the interception, emphasizing that such readiness is vital for the region given Russia's ongoing aggression against Ukraine. While Lithuanian authorities initially suggested the drone likely entered from Belarus, Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto stated the aircraft most probably originated from Russia.

Authorities have issued air threat alerts for Vilnius and Kaunas counties. Military and police specialists are currently investigating the wreckage to determine the drone's exact type, purpose, and whether it was carrying explosives. The incident marks a significant moment for the Baltic region, as it is the first time NATO jets have shot down a drone within Lithuanian airspace.
