Bavaria potato yields drop 30% amid drought and pests

Potato producers in Bavaria are facing a significant decline in yields, with estimates indicating a reduction of approximately 30% compared to previous levels. Factors contributing to this shortfall include drought, heat, and the spread of pests and diseases such as the meadow spittlebug, Stolbur, and SBR, which are now prevalent across nearly the entire region.

Despite rising market prices and higher storage prices, many farmers are unlikely to benefit from the current market trend. This is due to numerous contracts signed during the winter period at lower prices, which now limit the potential revenue for producers facing a much smaller harvest.
