Bavaria promotes university startup culture to drive innovation
Tobias Gotthardt, State Secretary in the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development, and Energy, has highlighted the critical role of university-based startup culture in driving economic sustainability and innovation.
Gotthardt noted that in an era of rapid digitalization, decarbonization, and global competition, established corporate structures may struggle to keep pace with change. He described startup culture at Bavarian universities as a “particle accelerator” that brings disruptive technologies—such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and biotechnology—to market more rapidly than large corporations.
Furthermore, Gotthardt emphasized that high startup density attracts international talent and capital, strengthening the regional business environment. To support these efforts, the HOCHSPRUNG entrepreneurship network connects stakeholders and activities across all Bavarian higher education institutions to facilitate exchange and information.
