Bavaria proposes acceleration law for defense industry

The Free State of Bavaria has launched a Bundesrat initiative calling on the German federal government to implement an acceleration law to speed up the expansion of the Bundeswehr and the defense industry.

Economic Minister Hubert Aiwanger emphasized the need to reduce bureaucratic hurdles, comparing the proposal to previous measures used to accelerate renewable energy expansion. The goal is to reduce investment and construction permit processes from several years to just months. The initiative seeks to prioritize construction projects vital to national and alliance defense within permit procedures, specifically requesting relief regarding emission control and nature conservation laws.

While the state clarifies that a general lowering of environmental standards is not intended, the proposal also aims to digitize and streamline security clearances for defense industry employees. This includes the potential recognition of existing security checks when employees change employers, provided the security level remains unchanged.
