Bavaria seeks EU exemption to continue fallow deer farming
The Bavarian state government is seeking an exemption from the European Commission to allow the continued agricultural keeping and breeding of fallow deer (Sikawild). The species was recently added to the EU list of invasive species, which mandates a ban on commercial holdings following a transition period ending in August 2027.
Bavarian Environment Minister Thorsten Glauber stated that fallow deer farming is a tradition in the region that combines agricultural use with ecological care and regional value creation, particularly on land unsuitable for conventional farming. To support the application, the Bavarian Environment Ministry has launched an online form for interested wildlife keepers to provide necessary data. Those not already known to the ministry are encouraged to contact their local nature conservation authorities.
In neighboring Austria, 203 businesses have already registered for similar exemptions. Under EU regulations, exemptions may be granted if there is a predominant public interest, such as economic or social reasons. While the transition period is active, EU law currently prohibits the breeding of these animals.
