Bavaria sees record enrollment in rural doctor medical quota
Bavaria is seeing a record number of medical students enrolling through specialized quotas designed to combat doctor shortages in rural areas. For the upcoming semester, 182 students will begin their studies under the 'Landarztquote' (rural doctor quota).
This program reserves up to eight percent of all medical study places in the state for applicants who commit to practicing general medicine or pediatrics in underserved regions for at least ten years. Since the program's inception in 2020, 743 students have utilized this quota. Health Minister Judith Gerlach noted that the program provides a pathway to medical school for applicants who may not have achieved a perfect 1.0 GPA but are willing to serve high-need areas.
Additionally, 14 new study places are being allocated through the public health service (ÖGD) quota. Currently, 81 students are enrolled in human medicine at Bavarian universities via this specific track.
