Bavaria summer barley cultivation hits historical low
Summer barley cultivation in Bavaria has reached a new historical low, with the cultivation area dropping to 73,273 hectares from 85,037 hectares in the previous year. According to the State Institute for Agriculture (LfL), the crop has lost significant importance compared to the 1980s, when over 300,000 hectares were sown.
The current harvest is estimated at approximately 0.37 million tons, representing a 22.7 percent decrease from the prior year, a decline attributed to widespread drought in the region. To mitigate the impact, Walter König, Managing Director of the Brewing Barley Community, noted that breweries are utilizing surpluses from the previous year and increasingly turning to winter barley.
While beer sales in Bavaria are declining, the demand for malt remains steady due to the production of non-alcoholic beer. Because local supplies are insufficient, Bavarian maltsters are increasingly relying on imports from other regions, such as Thuringia.
