Bavaria to cut asylum accommodation by 42,000 places

The Bavarian interior ministry announced a major reduction of housing for asylum seekers. By the end of the first half of 2026, about 15,300 places had already been eliminated, and the state aims to remove at least 20,000 more that year. A further 22,000 places are slated for removal by the end of 2027, bringing the total cut to roughly 42,000 – about one‑quarter of all accommodation in the state. The move targets costly facilities such as hotels and emergency shelters and is intended to ease municipal budgets. Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann noted a sharp decline in applications, with asylum entries falling 39 % in the first half of 2026 compared with the previous year, while terminations of stays reached 7,206, well above the 4,179 new arrivals.
