Bavaria to roll out smartphone‑based In‑Out ticket system from 2027

The Bavarian Ministry of Transport announced that a new In‑Out ticket system – called “swipe” – will be introduced across the state’s public‑transport network starting in 2027. Passengers will check in via a smartphone app before boarding a bus or train, travel, and then check out at their destination; the fare is calculated automatically after the trip, eliminating the need to know fare zones or purchase a ticket in advance.

The system is already in use in some local transport associations, such as the Münchner Verkehrsverbund (MVV). It will allow journeys to be billed across regional transport‑association borders. State officials say the rollout aims to simplify ticketing and encourage more people to use public transport. The Greens criticised the state government’s decision to abandon a statewide ticket‑unification plan in favour of the new system, urging more attractive offers for occasional travellers.

Implementation will be gradual, with the first phase expected to begin in 2027, and the technology will rely on GPS‑based tracking and automatic price calculation.
