Bavaria advances hospital reform with new funding allocations

Bavarian Health Minister Judith Gerlach announced that the state plans to complete the reassignment of service groups for all roughly 3,400 hospital applications by the end of the year. The reform, driven by a federal law on performance groups, will determine which medical services are reimbursed by statutory insurers and aims to stabilize hospital finances, improve staffing, and eliminate overcapacity, especially in rural areas. Gerlach warned that while outright closures cannot be ruled out, the goal is to ensure adequate emergency and basic care within reasonable distances.

The Bavarian cabinet has approved a €55.25 million expansion of the operating theatre, intensive‑care and geriatric units at Asklepios City Clinic Bad Tölz, and a €27.42 million refurbishment of the Altmühlfranken Clinic in Weißenburg. These projects are part of a larger hospital‑building programme that includes 13 new initiatives totalling nearly €600 million, funded by €6.2 billion earmarked for 2026‑2031. Over 60 % of the programme’s funds target facilities outside major urban centres, signalling a strong emphasis on rural health infrastructure.
