Bavarian adult education centers expand digital and AI courses
Adult education centers (Volkshochschulen) in Bavaria are navigating a shift toward digitalization while facing financial pressure from commercial language and professional coaching apps.
Marina Bilotta Gutheil, head of the Augsburg Adult Education Center, reports that over 25 percent of their courses are now available digitally. To compete with commercial platforms, these centers are developing their own digital formats while emphasizing unique advantages such as personal guidance, community learning, and non-commercial environments.
In response to the rise of artificial intelligence and disinformation, the centers are also integrating AI into their curricula. This includes new initiatives like the ‘Workshop for Judgment’ in Augsburg, designed to help participants critically evaluate and categorize information.
