Bavarian Churches Face Financial Strain Amid Membership Decline
In Bavaria, both Catholic and Protestant churches are seeing sharp drops in membership, with 81,852 Catholics and about 42,000 Protestants leaving the churches in the past year. The loss is reducing church‑tax income and prompting concerns over future finances.
The Protestant Landeskirche projects a modest surplus for the year, reporting revenues of €967 million against expenses of €959 million. Catholic dioceses show mixed results: Passau expects a deficit of €1.6 million, Würzburg anticipates a shortfall of roughly €1.1 million but expects €179.7 million in church‑tax revenue, and Regensburg forecasts a break‑even balance with €383.3 million in revenues, most of which come from church taxes. Experts warn that continued membership erosion could further erode tax revenues.
