Bavarian cucumber farmers face challenges from heat and irrigation disputes

The cucumber harvest in Bavaria is nearing its end following a challenging summer characterized by high heat and drought. While overall yields have been good in terms of quantity, the heat has caused cucumbers to grow larger than the smaller varieties typically preferred by the market. Smaller cucumbers generally command higher prices but require more labor-intensive harvesting.

Farmers faced significant economic pressure due to the need for regular irrigation to sustain crops during dry periods. These additional water costs, combined with rising expenses for diesel, fertilizer, and minimum wages, have strained profitability as costs cannot be fully passed on to consumers.

Furthermore, the season has been marked by legal tensions. Due to the visibility of irrigated fields and concerns over declining groundwater levels, local district offices have received complaints and reports against cucumber farmers regarding their irrigation practices.
