Bavarian flight prices jump as kerosene costs climb

Recent rise in global oil prices has pushed kerosene costs up, leading German airlines to raise ticket prices for the upcoming holiday season. According to the Federal Statistical Office, average fares in the first half of 2026 were 8.5 % higher for international trips and 9.5 % higher for domestic flights compared with the same period in 2025. Economy fares to Central America saw the biggest jump at 12.5 %, while routes to Europe rose about 11.5 %. Prices to Asia, Australia and North America increased more modestly, and flights to Africa were about 12 % cheaper.

Munich Airport’s chief Jost Lammers said kerosene supplies remain secured after the EU liberalised non‑European fuel imports and local refineries are operating at full capacity, but the higher oil price – around $93 per barrel versus $70 a year earlier – means operating costs stay elevated. The German government reduced the air traffic tax in July, cutting fees for short, medium and long‑haul flights, yet the overall fare increase remains significant for travellers.
