Forest Fires Ignite across Bavaria, Hesse and Austria

A series of forest fires broke out across southern Germany and western Austria in early July 2026. In Bavaria, the German Weather Service (DWD) warned that large parts of the state would face the second‑highest fire danger level (level 4 of 5) on 12–13 July, with the central and northeastern regions most at risk. A blaze in Nürnberg burned about 3,000 m² before being contained.

Near Frankfurt Airport, a fire spread to 40,000 m² of forest near Mörfelden‑Walldorf, prompting a large‑scale response of roughly 130 firefighters. “We hope to have it contained soon,” said city fire inspector Marco Schmitz. The crew also had to work cautiously because of suspected old ammunition in the ground.

In Austria’s East Tyrol, a wildfire in the Virgen municipality burned around 12 ha of steep, dry forest. About 450 firefighters, several helicopters and a military Black Hawk helicopter were deployed. By Monday the fire was declared “Brand aus”.

Another blaze in the Virgental (Mitteldorfer Wald) was brought under control with the help of an Austrian army S‑70 Black Hawk and a tank‑fuel truck, as confirmed by Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner.

Smaller incidents were reported elsewhere: a 100 m² surface fire on the Grürmannsheide in Iserlohn, suspected to have been caused by an improperly extinguished campfire or cigarette, and a 400 m² fire between Lindchen and Allmosen in Brandenburg, investigated as possible arson.
