Bavarian Greens call for €200 million to equip schools and care facilities with air‑conditioning

Green Party lawmakers in Bavaria, led by state parliamentary group head Katharina Schulze, are demanding an immediate allocation of €200 million for air‑conditioning units in schools, kindergartens, hospitals and nursing homes. The money, they say, should come from the state's share of the federal Länder‑Finanzausgleich and be transferred directly to municipalities without passing through the state budget.

Schulze links the request to the recent extreme heat wave, noting that June was the second‑hottest month on record for Bavaria and that a new all‑time temperature record was set this year. She argues that protecting people from heat is both a health and an economic imperative, warning that children cannot learn and vulnerable adults cannot be cared for in classrooms or wards above 30 °C.

The demand coincides with a broader federal financial package approved by the Bundestag, which will provide a €1 billion annual grant to states and municipalities from 2026 to 2029. Roughly €200 million of this could be earmarked for Bavaria, supporting the Greens' proposal to fund climate‑adaptation measures in public facilities.
