German Greens address energy goals and democratic risks
The German Green Party is addressing internal and external political challenges. In Bavaria, the party is pushing an energy transition goal to have two million heat pumps operational by 2040 to reduce dependence on oil and gas. Despite current polling numbers hovering around 13 percent, parliamentary group leader Katharina Schulze is targeting the 2028 state elections with a focus on environmental protection and affordability.
Separately, former Baden-Württemberg Minister-President Winfried Kretschmann has expressed grave concerns regarding the state of German democracy. He warned that the rise of extremist parties like the AfD suggests a “crisis of argumentation,” noting that the political establishment has historically marginalized rather than engaged with extremist elements. He cautioned that democracy could be at risk if these trends are not addressed through meaningful debate.
