Bavarian Hospitals Seek Emergency Funding Amid Federal Savings Package

The Bavarian Association of Cities (Städtetag) has called on the state government to launch an emergency aid program for hospitals in Bavaria after the federal parliament passed a savings package for the statutory health insurance system. Mayor Markus Pannermayr of Straubing (CSU), who chairs the Städtetag, warned that the new law could trigger uncoordinated hospital closures and urged the state to provide sufficient compensation.

Bavarian Minister President Markus Söder (CSU) announced that the state will enter an intensive dialogue with municipal hospital operators and the broader hospital sector to safeguard emergency care and specialist medicine. He affirmed support for the federal savings package while acknowledging the financial pressure it places on local clinics, stressing the importance of preventing a “hospital death” in the state and protecting the German economic location.
