Bavarian Lake Chiemsee Draws Visitors to Historic Herrenchiemsee Palace and Fraueninsel Monastery

Chiemsee, Germany's largest lake and often called the "Bavarian Sea," lies about 90 km southeast of Munich in the state of Bavaria. Its roughly 80 km² surface is bordered by towns such as Prien am Chiemsee, a popular gateway for boat trips to the lake’s islands.

The biggest island, Herreninsel, hosts the opulent Herrenchiemsee Palace, commissioned by King Ludwig II in the late 19th century as a private homage to Versailles.
