Markus Söder announces 1,200‑km Bavarian water megaleitung

Markus Söder Bavaria water megaleitung climate change Starnberger See

In the final cabinet meeting before the summer break, held on the MS Starnberg on Lake Starnberg, Bavarian Minister President Markus Söder (CSU) addressed rising heat waves and water scarcity. He pledged stronger support for air‑conditioning in public buildings such as hospitals, care homes, kindergartens and schools.

Söder also confirmed plans for a 1,200‑kilometre "water megaleitung" that would convey water from southern Bavaria to the north‑east and Franconia regions. He described the scheme as a "generationsproject" aimed at securing the state's water supply amid climate‑driven low‑ground‑water levels, reduced lake levels and more frequent heat extremes. The proposal includes expanding the low‑water information service with real‑time data on water levels, flows and temperatures, and enhancing natural water retention in the landscape.
