Bavarian Residents Urged to Keep Windows Closed to Prevent Bat Intrusions

Young bats in late summer may mistakenly fly into homes through open or tilted windows, especially in August, according to Alexander Gnatz of the Naturschutzverband LBV in Hilpoltstein. The LBV warns that both residential and office windows can act like cave entrances, and air‑conditioning units may also attract them.

The city of Würzburg asks citizens to keep windows shut when away and to avoid leaving them tilted after work. If a bat is found, residents should stay calm, close interior doors, turn off lights, open a window to let it exit, or gently capture it with gloves and place it in a box until it can be released in the evening. A regional bat‑help hotline is available in the Nuremberg metropolitan area.
