Bavarian restaurateur Alexander Egger faces threats after Oktoberfest tent lawsuit

Bavarian restaurateur Alexander Egger filed a lawsuit demanding that the allocation of two major Oktoberfest tents – the historic Schottenhamel tent and the Paulaner Festzelt – be decided under European Union procurement rules. He argues that the current scoring system for tent assignments is inconsistent and opaque.

Following the legal action, Egger reports that he, his family, employees and suppliers have been subjected to harassment and threats. He told the Süddeutsche Zeitung, "The excitement has reached a level I could never have imagined and it also concerns people's safety." Citing security concerns, Egger announced that his "Münchner Stubn" will not operate on the Wiesn this year, although the pending main hearing in September will not affect the current festival. He dismissed fears of foreign beers such as Guinness as "complete nonsense" and emphasized that the Oktoberfest already has an international character.
