Bavarian sports clubs reach record 5.1 million members

Organized sports in Bavaria are experiencing significant growth, with the number of memberships in the state's 11,500 clubs surpassing 5.1 million for the first time. According to the Bavarian State Sports Association (BLSV), this represents an increase of more than 700,000 active participants compared to previous years.

BLSV President Jörg Ammon noted that the growth follows a period of membership losses during the COVID-19 pandemic. He attributed the surge to a fundamental shift in public mindset toward a more conscious, healthy, and active lifestyle. The association also identified potential bids for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Munich for the years 2036, 2040, or 2044 as a significant driver for interest in organized sports.

Children and youth sports have seen the most substantial gains, growing by over 10 percent in the last three years. Currently, more than 2.2 million children and young adults up to the age of 26 are active in Bavarian sports clubs.
