Bavarian Study Shows Mass Screening Can Detect Early Type 1 Diabetes

A large screening programme (FR1da) conducted in Bavaria, Germany, evaluated over 220,000 children aged around three years. By testing for at least two of four auto‑antibodies, the study identified 590 cases of presymptomatic type 1 diabetes, representing 0.3 % of participants.

Follow‑up showed that 81 % of these children progressed to clinical diabetes, with an annual conversion rate of roughly 9.6 %. The findings support the feasibility of population‑wide screening, independent of family history, and could enable early treatment with drugs such as teplizumab, which in France can delay onset of insulin‑dependent disease by about three years.
