Bavarian UV-Index Boards Installed Across Public Spaces

Bavaria is installing up to 500 UV‑Index information boards at lakes, parks, swimming pools, schools, kindergartens and municipal buildings. The 250th board was placed in Nuremberg, with the remaining units expected to be set up before the end of summer. The boards display the current UV‑index, offer protection advice such as sunscreen use, head covering or seeking shade, and provide a QR code that links to detailed data from the German Weather Service and the Federal Office for Radiation Protection.

The initiative, driven by the Bavarian Ministry of Health under Minister Judith Gerlach, the AOK Bayern health insurer and the regional health network HealthRegionPLUS, aims to raise awareness of the health risks of intense sunlight. Gerlach noted that in 2024 Bavaria recorded over 23,000 new cases of white skin cancer and 4,800 cases of the rarer black skin cancer, underscoring the need for preventive measures.
