Bawku West: Nursing mother shot dead by unidentified gunmen
A 27-year-old woman, identified as Koyraga Nbeduma, was shot dead by two unidentified gunmen in the Bawku West District of Ghana's Upper East Region. The incident occurred on Monday, September 21, 2026, along the Tilli–Widnaba road.
Ms. Nbeduma, a nursing mother of a three-month-old baby, was traveling with another woman, Barikisu Ali, after milling corn at Azupupunga. While the second woman managed to escape, Ms. Nbeduma was attacked. Her body was later discovered approximately 200 metres from the road in a maize farm, while her three-month-old infant was found by the roadside.
Zebilla Police Commander DSP Jackson Kpirtufe confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are underway to establish a motive and identify the suspects. The Bawku area has a history of intercommunal violence stemming from long-running chieftaincy disputes, which frequently result in deadly clashes and heightened security presence.
