Bay Area transit agencies face $800 million deficit

Bay Area transit agencies face significant budget deficits, with BART, Muni, AC Transit, and Caltrain projected to have a combined $800 million operating deficit starting next year. To address these financial gaps, voters will consider Measure RTM, also known as the Connect Bay Area Transit Initiative. This measure proposes a half-cent sales tax in Alameda, Contra Costa, Santa Clara, and San Mateo counties, and a one-cent sales tax in San Francisco, aiming to raise approximately $1 billion annually for 14 years.

Simultaneously, advocacy groups like CalBike are campaigning against Proposition 43. While Measure RTM and San Francisco’s Proposition H seek to fund transit through citizen-led taxes, Proposition 43 would raise the approval threshold for such local special taxes from a simple majority to a two-thirds requirement. Opponents argue this change would make it significantly harder for communities to secure funding for essential services like safer streets and reliable transit.
