Bay Area Voters Back Transit Sales Tax Measure in Latest Poll

A new poll released by supporters of the Connect Bay Area citizen‑led initiative shows 54% of Bay Area voters favor the half‑cent sales‑tax measure slated for the November ballot. The proposal would impose a half‑cent tax in Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties and a one‑cent tax in San Francisco for 14 years, generating roughly $980 million a year for local transit agencies. Proponents say the funds would protect services on Caltrain, BART, VTA and SamTrans, which face revenue shortfalls as ridership remains below pre‑COVID levels. Without the measure, officials warn of reduced train frequencies, the end of weekend service and earlier evening shutdowns.

Adina Levin, executive director of the transit advocacy nonprofit Seamless Bay Area, warned that lacking new revenue would reverse recent ridership gains and urged voters to support the initiative, noting that many commuters signed after learning that service cuts were possible.
