Bay leaves under mattresses trend for sleep and pest protection

A social media trend involving placing three bay leaves under a mattress has gained popularity, with proponents claiming it promotes calmer sleep, fresher bedroom air, and protection against pests.

The practice draws on ancient traditions; historical writings, including mentions by Pliny the Elder, describe using leaves in bedding to ward off vermin. Scientifically, bay laurel (Laurus nobilis) contains volatile compounds such as 1,8-cineole, linalool, and eugenol. As body heat is released during sleep, these essential oils can be slowly emitted, creating a subtle herbal fragrance.

While the aromatic effect may be pleasant, experts note that the results are modest. The practice is not a substitute for standard hygiene measures, such as regular laundering of bedding or using anti-dust mite covers.
